Archaeologist Highlight: Khaled al-Asaad

Writer: Nicholas SikellisNicholas Sikellis

Khaled al-Asaad was a Syrian archaeologist. Specifically, he was the head of antiquities at Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Before ISIS took over Palmyra in 2015, al-Asaad worked swiftly to evacuate the city's museum and ensure that all of the artifacts inside were preserved. For months, ISIS tortured al-Asaad in an attempt to find these hidden artifacts. However, al-Asaad kept the secret and was eventually murdered. al-Asaad's bravery was celebrated around the world, and became an inspiration for many others. Simply put, Khaled al-Asaad put the culture of his home over himself. Read more about al-Asaad here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/18/isis-beheads-archaeologist-syria
